Travel
season is upon us and, if you are like most travelers, the first thing you do
in preparation for your trip is to hit a bunch of websites to research
destinations, rates, high points, and special deals.
Now there is
a new website called www.freewheelingtraveler.com that’s a little different. This is a
site specifically designed for independent-minded travelers who want to set
their own travel agendas and arrange their own itineraries.
Full
disclosure: the site is owned by my brother and sister-in-law, world travelers
and ultra-bicycle tourists as well. Don’t let that deter you, though, this is a
terrific website for those who want to really experience the local culture and
avoid the tourist traps.
Freewheelingtraveler.com
is for those who already plan their own trips and for those who want to try it
themselves. All visitors to the
site are encouraged to share experiences, travel stories and resources.
This is travel “through the back door”, a term coined by European travel
expert Rick Steves, meaning to experience a place as a local.
Although
there are links to the usual sites for the cheapest airfares or the lowest
hotel rates there are a host of other resources that other, more conventional
sites don’t offer. Do use freewheelingtraveler.com to share your stories,
photos, favorite spots, travel tips, and unique finds. Also use it for the
resources that others have discovered for volunteering, teaching English
in a foreign country, finding embassies and consulates, finding local trains or
ferries, currency conversion, travel insurance (shameless plug for us but we offer
really excellent coverage) and exotic destinations.
So, if
you’re tired of the same old thing when it comes to your vacations, whether
travelling in the USA or abroad, you owe it to yourself and your family to take
a peek at www.freewheelingtraveler.com. Thanks for reading.
